Smith And Wesson Model 29 Serial Numbers

Did Smith and Wesson overlap production of the Model 10 dash numbers? Counting only the tapered barrel versions, for example, is it safe to say that no 4-screw 10-2s left the factory alongside 3-screw 10-4s?

And that no 10-4s with the old rear-sight left alongside 10-5s with the new sight? It is my understanding the tapered barrel Models 10-4 and 10-5 were both introduced in 1962 (the first of the 3 screw models), and the 10-7 was introduced in 1977.So, any Model 10-4 was manufactured prior to 1962, but that a 10-7 might be from anywhere from 1962 to 1977?Also, I understand the heavy barrelled 10-3 came out in 1961, the 10-6 in 1662 and the 10-8 in 1977, so all 10-3s were produced prior to 1962?Thanks. Your question is hard to answer because 'production' and 'leave the factory' (shipping?) are two different things. S&W doesn't really keep track of 'production' dates. (At least they didn't unless there has been a recent change.) The date associated with a dash-mod is when the change was implemented. Guns already part way through production may of may not get the mod. It depends on just where they are in the line. Completed guns come off the line and are placed in the vault.

When taken from the vault for shipment they may or may not be in 'production/serial' order. I have seen Smiths that shipped years after they were produced. Nothing is clean and straightforward when it comes to S&W. (They are making guns for the public, not so collectors can put them in neat little orderly boxes.

I should have said produced along side. I'm just trying to get a quick, general way to evaluate whether a S&W is C&R eligible and worth following up on.' Pre-10', 'Victory', no model number 'M&P' definately are. 10s are tricky.

It seems like most 4-screws are worth checking into. And anything from 10-7 and above clearly came from 1977 or later.

But the 10-4 to 10-6 are hazy. In particular, there are a LOT of 10-5s out there and it seems like its safe to say almost all were ineligible.
