A little more history concerning ARC. Arc and its license was owned by a company called Arcware in the CPM days. PkArc had developed a much faster method of creating and extracting ARC files.
Arcware sued PkArc and won in the lawsuit. PkArc had developed the Zip architecture on the side and became PkZip.

There have been changes since, but Zip was a much better method of compression at the time and is still the standard for Windows in particular. In the Unix/Linux environments compress, uncompress, tar, gzip, gunzip, and many others are used, but these are the most common.
